After four races today Alinghi is sitting in fourth place at the fifth event of the Challenge Julius Baer Championship with another day of racing ahead tomorrow. The team was consistent throughout the day taking a 4th, two 3rds and a 5th. The 10-strong D35 fleet raced in superb sunny conditions with a light 5 to 7 knot breeze and Lake Geneva swarmed with hundreds of spectator boats following the race. While this added to the atmosphere it churned up the waters significantly for the competitors!
Pierre-Yves Jorand, mainsail trimmer on board, describes the day
“We had a good day today. The conditions were great and there was a good atmosphere on the water. It felt good to be back after a two month pause since the last D35 event.”
Do you think this break has had an impact in the fleet’s performance today?
“We hadn’t raced together as a team since the Bol d’Or in mid-June. Unfortunately the two practice days we had weren’t that great because the breeze was very light, but today we were very consistent in terms of results, starts and crew work. Tomorrow we’ll put more pressure on and more risk and we’ll see what the day brings.”
What are the conditions expected for tomorrow?
“Hopefully we’ll get some Southwesterly later in the day and we expect a switch to the South at midday, which would be great as the wind should pick up to 10-12 knots.”
Were the other teams also consistent or has it been a bit of a random poll of results?
“Some other teams such as Zen too and Foncia have been great today. The pin end start today was powerful because the left hand part of the course had more wind pressure and Zen too managed to get the pin end three times out of four races. I think all the teams will have the chance to win a race tomorrow.”
